Writing With Confidence Starts Now

In this entry: A writing update & some recent obsessions!

Writing With Confidence Starts Now

It's safe to say that I'm finally stepping into my life as a writer—and it's so damn fulfilling!

This past month, I started a seven-week writing workshop. As with anything new, I was naturally nervous for the first session. I'd been anticipating the class's start since officially locking in my enrollment.

I've also wanted to take this specific workshop for a while, ever since I followed the instructor, author Haley Jakobson, on social media during the rollout of her debut novel, Old Enough. I'd seen plenty of prior students' reviews about how the workshop transformed their writing lives. And whenever Haley would announce enrollment for a new cohort in her newsletter, I'd think: One day...

This year, that day finally came for me. I knew I had to jump in.

The workshop, aptly named Writing With Confidence, is doing just that: helping me build fortitude and self-assurance as a writer. I'm starting to silence my inner critic more, letting fewer daily doubts creep in. I'm learning to work towards generating and fostering my own creativity rather than constantly consuming others'. I'm realizing that my words have value and that I'm a storyteller, through and through. Only two workshop sessions in, and I've not only gained motivation and insight, but a new community of 14 other brilliant writers to grow alongside.

Cristian's Commonplace is also an essential stepping stone in my evolution as a writer. Every two weeks, I'll continue sending these emails to you—alternating entries with one that contains a longer essay (like the previous entry) and one that's more of a writing update, along with thoughts on art that's fueling my creativity (like this one).

I'm grateful to have you along for the journey.

Recent Obsessions:

You might not know his name, but you've definitely heard his music. Hans Zimmer is one of those artists whose work speaks for itself. That's why I had to watch this concert documentary even though I'd seen the actual concert two months prior. This is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates film as a medium!

I may be biased because I am helping market the book, and I also produced the audiobook edition, but my friend Darrell's book, Spiritual But Not Anxious, is worth a read (or listen). Darrell is simply one of those writers and teachers who just gets it! Assisting in the publication and distribution of this book is definitely a factor in motivating me to work on my own. Seriously—I listened to the book during the recording and editing stages of production 3-4 times. I also helped comb through drafts for design and copy edits. And I'll certainly still revisit the book again in the future. There's so much more to glean from its text.

There's a reason that Severance is the show that everyone's talking about. It's a trippy, addictive show with a lot to say about work, who (and what) we give our time and lives to, and the persistence of love. I've thoroughly enjoyed Ben Stiller and Adam Scott breaking down episodes and giving us peeks behind the split curtain after watching every episode. Also! Even though I love binging some shows, it's so freaking nice to have a weekly episode drop. It doesn't feel overwhelming and also gives more fuel for discussion to break through the zeitgeist.

Thank you so much for reading! See you at the next one. 🙏

Cheers,

Cristian
